Who is Judge Beryl Howell? A Glimpse into Her Personal & Professional Journey

Born on December 3, 1956, in Fort Benning, Georgia, Howell’s journey to the judiciary is a testament to her unwavering commitment to justice.
Raised in a military family, Howell’s educational pursuits led her to Bryn Mawr College, where she graduated with honors in philosophy in 1978. Her passion for the law drove her to Columbia Law School, where she earned her Juris Doctor in 1983, distinguishing herself as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar.
Beginning her legal career as a law clerk, Howell’s path took her through private practice and public service, including roles as an assistant United States attorney and vital contributions to the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary. Her legislative work played a crucial role in expanding electronic access to government records, earning her recognition for defending the Freedom of Information Act.
Transitioning to the private sector, Howell’s tenure at Stroz Friedberg showcased her expertise in digital risk management and investigations, solidifying her influence in the legal and digital realms. President Barack Obama nominated her for the federal bench in 2010, a position she officially assumed on December 27, 2010.
Marching further into history, Judge Beryl Howell became the chief judge of the U.S. District Court, a position she held for an impressive 7-year span until March 17, 2023. Known for her historic decisions, she currently presides over high-profile cases, such as the Rudy Giuliani defamation case, where she recently declared him guilty, resulting in a substantial $148 million verdict in favor of the accusers.
Beyond her legal prowess, Judge Beryl Howell remains notably private about her personal life. Married to Michael Rosenfeld, an Executive Producer at National Geographic, they share the joy of parenthood with three children.
